Nine arch bridge Ella

Built at 3100 m above sea level, among the craggy peaks of the Central Highlands, the Nine Arches forms a viaduct between the demo and Ella Railway stations. Built entirely out of brick, rock, and cement without a single piece of steel the bridge has stood solid since 1921, its time of creation. According to history, the bridge was built by the locals using such materials; when the construction came to a standstill from the lack of steel caused by World War I. But, in addition to this history and lore abounds about the creation of the bridge.

A very photogenic railway bridge, caught with lucky timing for panoramic views from above with a train crossing before descending to take a closer look. We have three of these huge bridges in my childhood town near Merthyr Tydfil , all not used for many years but like this one still standing proudly.

We walked there from Ella using the first rather than the main entry into the forest (by Adam's Peak), so we were lucky to find it in the absence of signs. At the bridge there are very beautiful perspectives to enjoy, you can buy fruit and after the crisis there will surely be cafés again. We took a tuktuk back into Ella right from the bridge which is a fun ride along tea plantations. This means even mobility impaired travellers can reach there.
